C Meunier, The Stevedore Of The Port Of Antwerp, H43.5cm, Signed Bronze, 19th Century
Artist: Constantin Meunier 1831-1905
Patinated bronze sculpture, better known as "Stevedor of the Port of Antwerp", signed by Cosntantin Meunier
Constantin Meunier (1831-1905) is a Belgian artist, renowned for his works representing the working world.
A student at the Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels from 1848, he exhibited at the Brussels Salon from 1851.
He will strive to represent the working world, both in painting and in his sculptures: Meunier becomes one of the masters of a realistic and social art that is close to naturalism. He contributes to giving a face to the worker and participates in the description of the new realities engendered by the industrial boom. He interprets it through his dark and dramatic painting, then — from the mid-1880s — his bronzes with angular features.
His works can be seen in various museums in Belgium, or at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
Slight wear of time to the patina.
Height 43.5cm.
22 x 18cm.
