Pair Of Venetian Rococo Style Giltwood Mirrors, Circa 1850, Italy

A pair of very fine Italian Rococo carved and gilded wood mirrors with original mirrors and beautiful patina. Carved in symmetrical form with flowers, scrollwork and rocailles. 

These mirror plates were used to reflect the candle light to increase the volume of light in the dark interiors of the time, while the gilded and carved surfaces also reflect the light. With their original mirror plates, which were most challenging to make at the time and highly prized, as they were quite expensive to acquire. These are highly sculptural hand-carved pieces which would make a dramatic and singular statement in any interior style.

The mirror’s graceful silhouette and intricate motifs pay homage to the refined aesthetics of the Rococo period, capturing the essence of classical beauty with its symmetrical lines and opulent ornamentation. Yet it is the enchanting aged patina that truly sets this piece apart, imbuing it with a sense of history and character that only time can bestow.
