First half of the 16th century France This rare carved oak panel, dating from the first half of the 16th century, depicts a toothless madman kneeling beneath a finely decorated Gothic arcading. This striking scene, sculpted with force and expressiveness, illustrates a major theme of late medieval thought: the madman, symbol of one who rejects divine wisdom. The figure, depicted on his knees, holds his head with one hand in a gesture of bewilderment or profound distress. His wide-open mouth, marked by the absence of teeth, expresses a cry or grimacing laughter, reinforcing the grotesque and dramatic aspect of the scene. His right hand, placed on his knee, conveys an attitude of weakness or moral collapse. Unlike the comic jesters, his cap does not have ears, but is simply shaped, enveloping the head, further emphasizing his condition as a fool and not a mere entertainer. His grimacing, almost caricature-like face is deliberately exaggerated to symbolize the fool as he was perceived in the late Middle Ages: the one who rejects divine wisdom. In the Christian tradition, the fool is the one who denies God, an idea found in the Psalms: “The fool says in his heart, There is no God.” (Ps 52:1).
