Object description :

"Art Deco Period Stingray Box"
Sharkskin box "Dit galuchat". * Wooden interior, the bottom of the box is covered with felt. Art Deco period. In very good condition. *The origin of the word "galuchat" dates back to the 18th century. It is the name of the first craftsman in the West who knew how to work shark and ray skin to make it into pearl leather. Jean-Claude Galluchat (bearing two "l") was a master leatherworker to King Louis XV and the Marquise de Pompadour. This craftsman worked this material so much on the most precious objects that the proper name became synonymous with this material. Galuchat was taken up in the decorative arts by being highlighted on furniture signed by the greatest "Art Deco" creators.
