Object description :

"Paul Mathieu 'impressionist Landscape' Painting Oil On Panel, Ca 1915"
Impressionist landscape painting painted in oil on cardboard panel around 1915.
Made up of brush strokes in the manner of pointillist painters, the artist used very little material to create his work, many spaces are deliberately unpainted.
The style and colors of the house as well as the entire landscape suggest that it is the Belgian coast or the north of France (Ostend, Steene, etc.).
A sober but sustained, luminous palette, the painting is pleasant and lively.
Dimensions with frame: 48 X 63cm.

Biography:
Paul Mathieu (1872 - 1932), is a Belgian impressionist painter and watercolourist. He trained at the Saint-Josse-ten-Noode drawing school and with J. Meyer. In his youth, he sought inspiration in the Sonian Forest.
In 1893, he was a founding member of the Sillon where he worked side by side with the painter Alfred Bastien.
In 1896, he abandoned still life to become a landscape painter.
He was a late Belgian representative of Impressionism. Paul Mathieu appreciated pearly light, clarity and refined hues. His subjects initially focused on the landscapes of Flanders, Brabant, Campine and the Belgian coast.
From the First World War, having left Belgium to stay in Paris, he liked to depict the landscapes of Île-de-France and Provence. He thus acquired a great reputation in France, which awarded him the Legion of Honour in 1923.
He taught at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels from 1896 to 1932.
In 1932, he was appointed vice-president of the Royal Society of Fine Arts of Belgium. His works can be found in most museums in Europe.
