A beautiful gilt bronze plaque, mounted on a velvet backing and framed in wood, created for the International Simplon Exhibition held in Milan in 1906. It depicts a young woman carrying baskets in front of the Simplon Tunnel, which connects Switzerland to Italy. The inscription “SIMPLON 1898-1905” is also visible on the tunnel entrance, referring to the years of work that led to its construction.
It is signed “Ovide Yencesse” in the lower right corner.
Ovide Yencesse (1869-1947) was a French sculptor and engraver specializing in medals. He participated in numerous salons and exhibitions, where he received many awards.
Some signs of wear are visible on the velvet backing.
