Head of a virile man - antique marble - circa 2nd century AD

This marble sculpture, dating from the 2nd century AD, represents a male head characterized by assertive features and a resolute expression.
The work demonstrates the expertise of ancient sculptors in the treatment of volume and the naturalistic rendering of faces.

The finely sculpted hair and marked facial structure suggest an influence of the aesthetic canons of the Roman imperial era. Although fragmentary, this piece retains a strong presence, revealing the importance given to the representation of strength and authority in ancient statuary.

A similar example was sold at Christie's in their sale of the Joukowsky collection on October 17, 2023 (lot 100).
