"Large Maffrash Karabag Panel - Armenia. Circa 1850. 103 X 50 Cm"
What is remarkable about this piece is the exceptional state of preservation. We are close to a miracle! This is a fragment, a panel, of Maffrash Karabag originating from the Caucasus. The Maffrash are the largest carrying bags used in the past by the nomadic peoples of Persia and the Caucasus. True works of art, these precious and highly refined objects were woven by the most experienced weavers. The Sumak technique used allows both extreme finesse and the creation of complex patterns of great precision. Wool on wool. Splendid, dense and saturated vegetable shades. Very beautiful luminosity and depth. Second Quarter 19th century Work referenced in the book Sumak Bags of Northwest Persia & Transcaucasia. John T. Wertime.
