"Armchair Stamped Jean Boucault, Received Master In 1728 - Paris, Louis XV, Circa 1760"
Louis XV period armchair à la Reine Natural beech [formerly lacquered] Stamped I. BOUCAULT on the inside of the rear crosspiece of the seat Jean Boucault (1705-1786), received master on April 8, 1728 Paris, circa 1760 ----- Width: 70 cm Total depth: 70 cm Total height: 97 cm ----- Jean Boucault, son of Louis, had his workshop on rue de Cléry. He mainly produced Louis XV chairs, but we know of a few of his productions that date from the beginning of the reign of Louis XVI. His stamp is quite rare and he seems to have produced - despite the length of his professional practice - relatively little [Nicolay 1976, p.23-23]. His chairs are always of good quality, elegant, discreetly sculpted, or even simply molded. Boucault supplied the Garde-Meuble de la Couronne, as evidenced by several chairs bearing the fire mark of the Château de Versailles. His other clients were the Duke of Choiseul and Louise Elisabeth, Duchess of Parma [Kjellberg 1989, p.84]. After practicing successfully for over half a century, he retired from business and ended his days in a house he had purchased at the entrance to the rue du Faubourg-Saint-Martin [Salverte 1975, p.30]. ----- A very elegant backrest, slightly violin-shaped and enriched with an asymmetrical leafy volute sculpture, vigorous whiplash armrests, very elegant front legs, finished with an original elongated cartouche motif, graceful proportions - all elements that mark the originality and virtuosity of an excellent seat joiner. ----- Very good condition of the wood, formerly lacquered. Two reinforcements in the belt. Two small reinforcements on the back of the upper crosspiece of the backrest. The four ends of the foot are inserted [over 2 cm] In its old livery of embossed velvet. This seat has never been upholstered with springs. ----- References Pierre KJELLBERG, French furniture of the 18th century, Dictionary of cabinetmakers and carpenters, Volume I, Les Editions de l'Amateur, Paris 1989 Jean NICOLAY, The art and manner of French master cabinetmakers in the 18th century, Editions Pygmalion, Paris 1976 François de SALVERTE, The cabinetmakers of the 18th century, their works and their brands, F. de Nobele, Paris 1975
