Object description :

"Magnificent And Important Restoration Period Clock, Early 19th Century, Gilded Bronze, 52 Cm"
This magnificent gilt bronze clock, dating from the Restoration period in the early 19th century, is an exceptional work both for its artistic conception and its utilitarian function. Measuring 52 cm in height, it depicts a touching and rare scene, showcasing the expertise and refinement of the craftsmen of this period. This type of clock was not only intended to tell the time, but also to embellish bourgeois interiors with a touch of sophistication and culture. The design of the clock is particularly remarkable. It presents a figurative scene where a woman, draped in a loose and elegant dress, is seated, holding a bowl in her hands. Beside her, a kneeling child appears to drink or eat what the woman offers him. This maternal and tender gesture is captured with remarkable finesse, evoking themes of care and protection that were highly prized in 19th-century art. The woman's dress is sculpted with meticulous folds, giving an impression of movement and fluidity that contrasts with the rigidity of the bronze. The features of the woman and child are soft and expressive, giving the scene a great humanity. The dial of the clock, located on the right side of the composition, is silver-coloured and stands out elegantly from the surrounding gilt bronze. It is surrounded by finely chiseled floral motifs, adding an additional ornamental dimension to the whole. Below the dial, decorative motifs, such as garlands of flowers and urns, underline the richness and complexity of the design. This attention to detail, characteristic of Restoration period clocks, reflects the taste for luxuriant decoration and classical symbolism. The base of the clock is also decorated with reliefs, including elements such as stylised wings and volutes. These motifs recall the neoclassical influences that were in vogue at the time, symbolising elegance and grandeur inspired by Antiquity. The large, sturdy base provides stability to the clock while also serving as a base for the sculptural details that unfold above. The mechanism of this clock is a wire mechanism, a movement system typical of early 19th-century clocks. This type of mechanism required regular maintenance and was prized for its precision and reliability. The use of gilt bronze throughout the structure is a testament to the superior quality of the piece, intended for a wealthy clientele who were keen to own objects that were both functional and artistic. Every aspect of this clock, from the texture of the woman's clothing to the child's curly hair, has been carefully crafted to reflect the craftsmanship of the time. The use of gilt bronze adds a luxurious dimension, catching the light and highlighting the fine details of the sculpture. This clock was not only a utilitarian object, but also a symbol of social status and refined taste. In short, this clock from the Restoration period is a remarkable work of art, where technical mastery and artistic expressiveness come together to create an object of great historical and aesthetic value. It embodies the spirit of the 19th century, where art and craftsmanship were closely linked to produce objects that transcend their primary function to become witnesses of a bygone era.
