A Rare Export Plate From The American Market Jiaqing 19th Century
A rare export plate for the American market. Finely decorated in the centre with a hunting dog 'The Spanish Pointer', within a blue enamel border. Chinese Jiaqing, 19th century.
Diameter; 19.6 cm (7 3/4").
Condition; small chip and 1.4 cm bruise below the rim.
Wear to the decoration.
The image is commonly referred to as 'The Spanish Pointer'. Originally a Thomas Bradford commissioned George Stubbs to paint the scene and the engraver William Woollett to copy it, the scene being published in 1768. Several later versions, derived from Woollett's engraving, were subsequently published. Notably by T. Cook as the engraved title of vol. II of the Sporting Magazine published in London in September 1793. It was probably this version that the Chinese decorators copied.
