A Large Qianlong Armorial Plaque English Coat Of Arms C1750
Large Armorial Dish Finely decorated in grisaille with the English arms of Field impaling Bagge. The rim is decorated with cartouches of Chinese landscapes and birds on branches. Qianlong C1750.
Condition; three shallow chips below the rim and a small chip to the rim.
The Field arms were granted in March 1653 to Field of Stanstedbury in Hertfordshire. The crest refers to the Elizabethan astronomer John Field (1520-78). There was also a later Field family at Ardsley in Yorkshire also with these arms. The relationship between these services is unclear. The Bagge family were originally from Norfolk and the arms were granted in 1566 to William Bagge of Shipdam. See J2 P.201 'Chinese Armorial Porcelain' Vol. II, David Sanctuary Howard.
