Jean Chevalier (1913-2002), Composition With Yellow Rectangles

Artist: Jean Chevalier (1913, Saint-pierre-de-chandieu -2002, Lyon)
Oil on canvas. 54 x 65 cm. Signed lower right.

This composition by Jean Chevalier illustrates the controlled abstraction that defines his late work. The yellow rectangles, arranged in an apparently random but subtly balanced way, are the focal points of the canvas. Their brightness contrasts with a textured grey background that seems to absorb the light, creating an intriguing visual tension.

The black and red graphic elements add a particular dynamic. The black lines, sometimes straight, sometimes curved, introduce a sense of movement, while the vibrant red touches disrupt the chromatic harmony, immediately drawing the eye.

Born in 1913, Jean Chevalier was a member of the ‘Témoignages’ group in Lyon. At the first Salon de Réalités Nouvelles in 1947, he exhibited a rhythmic abstract canvas reminiscent of the work of his friend Albert Gleizes.
