VENTE A PRIX COUTANT:
Gothic olive wood sculpture is part of a late medieval artistic tradition, particularly flourishing between the 12th and 16th centuries. Gothic sculptors, specializing in the creation of religious works, often used wood, including olive wood, for its fine texture and durability. Olive wood was valued for its fineness, density, and ability to be worked with precision, allowing for highly refined details in religious figures, such as statues of the Virgin Mary, crucifixes, saints, or altarpieces. The Gothic style in sculpture is characterized by a concern for realism and a tendency to accentuate the expressiveness of faces and bodies. Artists sought to convey deep religious emotions, often with slender figures and a certain dynamism in poses. In wood carving, the works were often polychromed, that is, painted to add extra color and detail, or gilded to enhance their sacred aspect.
Olive wood carvings were particularly prized in Mediterranean regions, where the tree grows abundantly. The use of this material gave the works a warm color and a smooth surface, which harmonizes well with the polychromy techniques used at the time.

Exceptional and rare Gothic Corpus Christi, carved in olive wood, of Tuscan origin and dating from around 1490. This remarkable piece, made in the style of the works of Nicola Pisano, displays an impressive finesse and detail, characteristic of the great master sculptors of the period.
The Christ is depicted alive, with his eyes and mouth open, symbolizing a powerful scene of the Crucifixion imbued with spirituality and emotion.
