First historian of the Dada movement whose studies, published in 1924 in magazines such as Cahiers d'Art and Minotaure, caught the attention of André Breton, Hugnet joined the surrealist group in 1932. After this collective experience, Georges Hugnet continued his search for the poetic absolute and graphic beauty through automatic decalcomanias in black ink, a technique developed with his friend Oscar Dominguez, photomontages and photographic collages, newspaper cuttings and the assembly of various materials: found objects, driftwood, pebbles, seaweed, torn paper.
