Netsuke - Sambaso Dancer - Pressed Horn - Late 19th Century
Netsuke in pressed brown horn depicting a sambaso dancer. Note on the back of the latter a very beautiful motif of a crane with outstretched wings.
The sambaso is a traditional dance performed before the main performance in Japanese theater. It was intended to appease the gods and make them lenient in the event of an accidental fault during the performance.
Japan, second half of the 19th century.
Good general condition, note a small chip between the himotoshi on the bottom of the garment.
