"Plate From The Meissen 'red Dragon' Service Circa 1735 Porcelain"
PLATES FROM THE MEISSEN 'RED DRAGON' SERVICE UM 1735 Painted in iron red with two phoenix birds in the mirror and two dragons on the standard between Chinese symbols, highlighted with gold. Swords mark in blue under glass. D. 24 cm. The 'Red Dragon' service was one of the first large dinner services ordered by the royal court of Saxony from Meissen. In the 'Preiskourant' of the manufactory from 1731, there are already pieces with a 'Red Dragon' decoration, but the first deliveries of such a service to the Dresden court pastry shop are not attested until 1733/34. R. Rückert, Meissener Porzellan, 1966; den Blaauwen, Meissen Porcelain in the Rijksmuseum, 2000, p. 45, gives details of this service and indications of other pieces in museums. Pieces from this service from the Hanns and Elisabeth Weinberg collection at Sotheby's New York, 10/11 November 2006, lot 192-199. Inv. no. 0.187 €750
