Pewter PITCHER with a shoulder shape, short flared foot, quarter-round goblet and two-bud thumb.
Clearly affixed control mark: crowned C / BEAVNE / 171(9).
Height: 17.5 cm.
BEAUNE (Burgundy), 18th century

Beautiful solid cast iron in very good condition and clearly marked.
Very rare provenance, only five examples encountered in the last 40 years...
Paradoxically, like the Bordeaux centers, the pitchers from this great wine center are very rare.
Generally speaking, these pitchers were the official wine measures of the Ancien Régime. Those used in public places, inns, taverns and various drinking establishments had to be visited by inspectors-gaugers in order to verify that they were "good measure".
Bibliography: "Eagle pottery in Burgundy" by Roger Verdier and Daniel Allix
