A utilitarian and decorative object, even an advertising one, pyrogen was very widespread in the 19th century in cafes, restaurants and private living rooms. Of varied shape and decoration, they were made in regula, bronze, wood, ceramic, silver or gold. Wall-mounted or flat, with or without a base, they had a cup for matches, a scraper and possibly a wick.
