Belgian school from the beginning of the 19th century, portrait of a child, a very graceful young brunette girl with blue eyes, wearing a neo-renaissance dress at the forefront of fashion at the beginning of the 19th century: a high tule collar reminiscent of 16th century strawberries , decorated with fine Bruges lace and chased gold buttons. The young girl is still dressed in the fashion of the empire, her curly hair held back by a headband tiara, she holds her silver-mounted bag in her hand. The painting is signed lower left JB Maes and dated 1818 (clearly readable but difficult to take a photo of due to the reflections). The painting is presented in a beautiful and rich Empire period frame, gilded with gold leaf. Jean-Baptiste Maes-Canini (1794 - 1856) was a student at the Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent. His work was rewarded very early on with numerous prizes: competitions for the schools of Fine Arts, in Mechelen in 1810, in Ghent in 1817, in Brussels in 1818, in Antwerp and in Amsterdam in 1819. Elected member of the Royal Society of Fine Arts -Arts of Ghent in 1820, the city of Ghent awarded him an annual pension to continue his training in Italy, which fascinated him and where he settled permanently to specialize with talent in Italian scenes. Our beautiful portrait dates from his Northern school period where it represents a young girl from the high society of Ghent or Brugge. Very pretty amateur portrait, ideal to complete a collection of neoclassical furniture from the early 19th century. It is in excellent condition: cleaned painting, on its original canvas with some old restorations (recanvassed), in its period frame gilded with gold leaf and restored by our gilder. Frame: 64cm x 77cm Canvas: 48cm x 59cm
