"19th Century Sugar Ax."
This sugar ax from the beginning of the 19th century may seem very surprising to modern consumers, accustomed to sugar cubes neatly stored in a box or powdered sugar. However, until the invention of lump sugar in 1873 by the Czech Jacob Kristof Rad (1799-1871), the sugar ax was an essential tool for housewives. Indeed, the packaging of sugar in Europe has until now very often been done in the form of a conical loaf of sugar, invented by the Venetians in the 15th century. This agglomerated sugar is then very hard and to remove it, a metal ax is necessary. This example measures approximately 30 centimeters which allows easy handling. At its end there is a curved blade for cutting large pieces, and an acorn-shaped tip, to then reduce the size of the pieces obtained. Good general condition, with traces of use.
