Navy Hst Framed. Sea Fortune. Marine Ex-voto.
Artist: O Diagé
Navy HST framed. Sea fortune. Marine ex-voto.
Marine. Hst 82cm x 61cm. Circa 1880. Marine ex-voto.
Bottom right: O Diagé
Gilt leaf frame Restoration and traces of use
The poignant image, well rendered and animated, of a fortune at sea which often awaited ships and the hard profession of long-distance sailors.
On board the schooner tormented by a storm in the open sea, the crew is busy on the stern boat.
Fighting against the raging elements carrying fragments and broken masts, a courageous sailor from the first boat tries to strike one end.
Ex-votos were offered by sailors in recognition of the divine protection they felt they had benefited from during tragic sea trips.
