High Period. Oak Paneling. 16th Century
Early period wood panel. 16th century.
Oak wood panel, early period, 16th century.
For the artisans of the time, the subject matter was more important than the support; it was common to assemble several pieces of wood. This is the case with this panel, made of three parts, including sapwood.
n a niche flanked by acanthus leaves and sculpted columns, the goddess of the earth leans on an ear of wheat.
Above and below are cartouches that appear to have been later covered over.
There are old restorations, but no missing pieces or holes from wood-boring insects.
A very beautiful early period chest or door element.
Ceres,
Goddess of the earth and fertility.
"She is the sap that rises from the earth and swells the young shoots. She ripens the wheat and makes the harvests ripen."
