"Montagne Louis Agricol (1879-1960) “lake Of Allos” Avignon Provence Donkey Colmars Montains"
MONTAGNE Louis Agricol (1879-1960)

“Lake of Allos”

Oil on canvas,
Signed lower right,
Stamp of the artist's studio on the back,

The Avignon painter Louis Agricol Montagné represents a view of Lake of Allos in the Alpes de Haute Provence.
In the foreground on the right we can see a donkey resting in the shade under a shelter of the lake chalet/restaurant.
The artist managed to recreate the atmosphere of the place on a summer day with the play of light on the water of the lake and contrast.
An artist who is used to depicting interior scenes in watercolor, Louis Montagné offers us here a mountain landscape in the South of France.

Lake Allos is the largest natural high-altitude lake in Europe. It extends over 43 hectares and peaks at an altitude of 2230 m in the heart of the Mercantour National Park.

A student of Paul Saïn and Cormon, he appeared at the Salon des Artistes français from 1901, where he obtained numerous awards during his participation. He exhibited very early in Avignon with the merchants Kassler and Mouret and during this period created decorative panels in collaboration with the painter Paul Saïn.
Wounded during the First World War, he lost an eye. This will not prevent him from having a brilliant career.
He appointed director of the Avignon School of Fine Arts from 1920 to 1928.
Louis Agricol Montagné is part of the Group of 13.

Dimensions: 33 x 46.5 cm at sight and 50 x 63.5 cm with its modern frame in wood.

Nb: A small restoration, without impact, should be noted on one edge of the work.
