Buddha Mucindila
The Awakened One seated in Virasana on the serpent Mucilinda (Muchalinda), whose seven heads once formed a canopy above the Buddha. Khmer art from Lopburi, 13th century. The story goes that during his meditation under the great sacred fig tree, the Bhodi tree, a torrential rain fell for seven days on Gautama Buddha. The King of Serpents, Mucalinda, appeared from the depths of the earth to protect the Awakened One.
