Notes: Hermann Werner was a genre painter. He was educated at the Düsseldorf Academy from 1838 to 1840 and then at Steffeck, Berlin. He established himself in Düsseldorf and became a member of the Malkasten Society of Artists.

Biography: Herman Werner was born in Samswegen in 1816 and passed away in 1905 in Düsseldorf. His artistic journey began in Düsseldorf, where he enrolled at the Academy. After some periods of travel, he eventually returned and settled there in 1862. Werner gained recognition for his depiction of genre scenes, particularly those portraying children at play and celebrating the humble virtues of rural family life. During the latter half of the 19th century, such paintings gained immense popularity. Alongside Werner, other notable artists like Adolf Eberle and Edmund Adler also belonged to the schools of this genre, which emerged in Munich and Düsseldorf.
