Playing cards was one of the favorite activities of 18th century peasants, often depicted in inns, here in a ruined landscape.
 The composition brings together several characters around a table playing cards, while another group prepares to surprise the player in a surprising way.  In the foreground we see a gentleman elegantly dressed in fashion under Louis XVI having his shoe shined.
