"Miss Djeck, April 20, 1837. Original Ink Wash And Sepia Attributed To Rodolphe Topffer. "
Magnificent and rare ink and sepia wash attributed to Rodolphe Topffer representing the elephant Miss Djeck in the ditches near the Porte de la Rive, in Geneva, very small facing the mass of onlookers. This wash is due to the famous Geneva artist Rodolphe Topffer. It is dated on the wall on the right, April 20, 1837. I attach the photo of a lithograph of a variant executed by Dunant. A book by Pierre-Yves Frei and Sandra Marongiu published by Swiss Knowledge tells the fate of a circus elephant killed in Geneva in 1837. Beyond the case of Miss Djeck, a historical perspective on our relationship with exotic animals, long treated as goods. Rodolphe Topffer is a famous Swiss painter and caricaturist, born in 1799 and died in 1846. Very well referenced. son of the no less famous Adam Topffer. Very good condition, a little (slightly yellowed at the top). Dimensions of the wash only at sight, 28.2 cm x 21 cm. In its frame, golden baguette, in very good condition, 44 cm x 36 cm. The drawing is done with great talent and the scene presents an interesting testimony to practices that are fortunately long gone.
