"Exceptional Neo-renaissance Walnut Bedroom"
Set of neo-renaissance bedroom furniture in walnut from the 19th century. It consists of a large 140 cm bed with a richly carved headboard. It is flanked by two terms, one feminine and the other representing a satyr, supporting capitals. The pediment is decorated with plant scrolls surmounted by a putto in the round sitting on a shell. The footboard is decorated in its center with a mascaron motif from which plant scrolls escape. These ornaments take place in a frame reproducing architectural motifs of classical inspiration: egg friezes, cornice, rosaries, etc., typical of the decorative vocabulary of the Renaissance. The uprights have a base carved with lion heads. We find the same patterns on the cabinet which opens with two doors and a large drawer in the lower part. It is richly sculpted and decorated with masculine terms, putto, plant scrolls and antique architectural ornaments. The bedside is also decorated with the same ornamental repertoire, notably the plant scrolls. It also borrows from the vocabulary of classical and Renaissance architecture: its upper part is supported by two finely carved balusters. This set is in very good condition and presents quality wood, sculpture and an exceptional patina. It is emblematic of the taste for Renaissance forms which manifested itself in French furniture from the mid-19th century. It was probably intended for an important private residence (castle, manor). The bed can accommodate a standard 140 x 190 cm slatted base.
