His studies took place at the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples, where he followed the courses of Gennaro Maldarelli and Anton Sminck van Pitloo. In 1848, he had his first official exhibition at the Bourbon exhibition: several watercolours and the Prospetto dell'Annunziata in Aversa and the Straordinaria navigata in Mola di Gaeta in 1847. His specialisation soon became the historical documentation of contemporary events in the wake of Salvatore Fergola (La processione del Corpus Domini nell'Abbazia di Montecassino). Parallel but less well known was a production of views of various genres, from exoticism to Venetian and Roman subjects, made for tourists.
