JACQUES MARIE OMER CAMOREYT (Lectoure, Gers, 1871 - 1963) A LARGE THREE MAST IN BORDEAUX HARBOR In the background, the Bichon shipyard in Lormont Oil on wood 30 x 23 cm Signed lower left and dated 1891 Beautiful period frame Louis XVI sculpted with pearls and ribbons Between the end of the 19th century and the first years of the 20th, Omer Camoreyt was one of the best painters of the port of Bordeaux, with a predilection for views of shipyards. But his Bordeaux works unfortunately remain quite rare. Born in the Gers, the young Camoreyt was encouraged by one of his parents, Eugène Camoreyt, drawing teacher and founder of the Lectoure museum. First a student at the Bordeaux School of Fine Arts, he cut his teeth at the Salon des Amis des Arts, where he exhibited paintings representing the Port of the Moon at the age of 16. Then he went to Paris where he was a student of Maignan, Bonnat and Cormon. Exhibiting at the Salon of French Artists, he won medals in 1899, 1900 and 1905. Following his apprenticeship in Bordeaux, he became a marine painter and represented ports in France, but also in Italy or on the Bosphorus. Furthermore, he became an etching engraver and illustrator, providing drawings for the press, as well as for editions of Arsène Lupin. He will also illustrate a luxury edition of Ramuntcho.
