Rare trepanation saw, called “Hey saw” (or “Hey saw”), in honor of the doctor-surgeon William Hey (1736 – 1819).
`This metal example, whose patinated metal handle illustrates repeated use, dates from the mid-19th century.
Trepanation is a surgical procedure that dates back to the Neolithic period (around 7,000 years ago) which consists of opening the skull to allow the removal of a region of the brain.
It was also used, during Antiquity (and much later!), to expel evil spirits, reduce the patient's madness and epilepsy.
