Maurice Aubret is one of the major Roanne painters, alongside Jean Puy, Maurice Tête, Maurice Montet, Octave Lafay and even Émile Noirot.
Born in 1897 in La Pacaudière, he remained attached to his native village for a long time, which became a recurring subject in his art. From an early age, he had the influence and teaching of the master watercolorist Octave Lafay, who was his drawing teacher. Enlisted on the front in 1918, he was unable to devote himself fully to painting, not even on his return, since he worked in a bank in Lyon. However, the settings and images of the neighborhoods he frequented daily will be found in his painting, when he represents the Café des Négociants for example. He founded the “cenacle” in 1927, with his painter friends from Roanne, which allowed him to begin to exhibit his art first in the region, then gradually throughout France. It was really in 1947, during the annual exhibition in the large room of the Town Hall which was entirely dedicated to him, that he began to be truly recognized.
He maintained regular correspondence with other Roannais painters, notably Jean Puy with whom he established a true friendship, which influenced his painting both in the way of treating the touch and in the subjects represented, ranging from intimate and family scenes. , with lively and lively outdoor scenes.
Close to the neo-impressionism of Pissaro or Seurat and evolving towards Matissian fauvism, Aubret tried different techniques, daring a rich and varied palette with lively tones and frank flat areas in his works. He also attaches great importance to drawing, particularly in his watercolors whose lines, clearly visible, seem both almost geometric and yet very curved on the bodies.
