"Icon Of Marie, Saints George And Matthew With Ex-voto, Russia Circa 1750 / Mother Of God Virgin"
Delicate and moving icon enriched in its lower border with three ex-votos, in the form of old coins offered during a wish or in gratitude for a grace obtained (healing, birth, marriage, professional and personal success, etc. ...).It dates from the 18th century -- circa 1750 -- and comes from central Russia.
The composition represents four miniaturist religious subjects (from top to bottom and left to right):
1/ Saint George slaying the dragon -- symbol of the victory of good over evil.
2/ The evangelist Saint Matthew.
3/ The Mother of God of compassion called “joy of all who suffer”.
4/ The Mother of God of the “burning bush”.
This painting on gold is made with great finesse using tempera (paint made from egg yolk and natural pigments) on a wooden panel. The chromatic range is rich and warm with a superb old patina.
The background is entirely gilded and the clothes are also sumptuously enhanced with gold.
Very good original state of conservation given its age. Slight wear from time and cracks. Traces of xylophagous insects now neutralized on the back of the icon and having not penetrated the pictorial layer
This collector's item is sold with its certificate of authenticity and a complete description of the work.
