Classic 19th century French Euterpe bronze by Pierre Alexander Schoenewerk (1820 - 1885), very finely sculpted and detailed, of the Greek goddess Euterpe who was one of the nine mousai (muses), the goddess of music and dance. She is shown here seated on an elaborate stool with her tortoiseshell liar leaning against the side. She is very beautiful and elegant, dressed in classic dresses, with stunning details on her hands, face, jewelry and hair, which is adorned with a garland of delicate flowers. Son of a sculptor, Alexandre Schoenewerk trained with the painter Jules Jollivet and the painter and sculptor Henri de Triqueti. He then followed the teaching of the famous sculptor David d'Angers. Being still a foreigner, he cannot enter the competition for the Prix de Rome. However, he debuted at the Salon of 1841 with Agar. Schoenewerk receives several commissions for the Louvre Palace: Bacchante (Cour Carrée), The Harvest, The Autumn, The Hunt (Cour Napoléon), Circe, Erigone (Wing of Flora), Galathée (Grande Galerie), The Fight (Cour Visconti ), which shows its importance.
