Note: the painting was exhibited in 1887 at the Union Artistique (Cercle des Mirlitons), Place Vendôme in Paris. It was then exhibited the same year at the Société des Amis des Arts in Lyon. A small preparatory wash by the artist, of very similar composition and entitled Prière du Soir (Evening Prayer), is in a private collection. It is annotated C'est l'heure où les enfants parlent avec les anges (It is the time when children speak with the angels).
