Oil on canvas "forest path" signed lower right Eugéne Deshaye 1862-68/1939, In an American box type frame in later blackened wood. Eugéne Deshaye is a French orientalist artist born in Algiers, he was a student of Jean Léon Gérôme, exhibited in Algiers but also throughout northern Africa as well as at the French artists' salon in Paris where he was rewarded. His work is characterized by bright and warm tones highlighting the landscapes of North Africa, particularly Algeria. He was appointed naval painter in 1910 and was made a knight of the Legion of Honor.
