From the age of 15 Maurice drew with great talent and at the age of 19 his attraction to the arts led him to draw and paint many subjects including the Wild Countryside (Eastern Belgium). In 1946, during a trip to the Côte d'Azur, Maurice Legrand discovered the light and colors of Provence. It was love at first sight. Everything was sold in Belgium and in 1947 Maurice, his wife and their two children settled in Boulouris (near Saint-Raphaël - Var). From 1948 it was the exploration of all of Provence and the villages of Haut Var then the discovery of the Camargue, untouched by all tourism and tourists) as well as short trips to Italy. His palette was completely transformed and adapted to the new colors and southern light. He will have the chance to meet Matisse and form friendships with this painter whom he loved very much for his fierce love of freedom, like him. In 1954, a Provençal farmhouse was built. The Roudoun farmhouse. With a beautiful workshop and a large exhibition room to accommodate many admirers and buyers of his works. He will have the opportunity to meet Picasso in his studio in Mougins. He will be very impressed by Picasso's drawing skills. In 1959 after the purchase of a second property in Seine et Marne. He began to paint this region and the Ile de France and will be present in numerous annual exhibitions in Paris and Brussels. In 1961, Maurice Legrand was invited to hold a major exhibition in Beirut, Lebanon. Parisian television and artistic media began to take an interest in his work. In 1970, Maurice extended his research into new subjects in other departments. He will discover Vendée, Brière, Sologne. The latter will be his new love. In 1973, he met Dali and the two painters appreciated each other very much. It is from Saint-Lucien that he and his wife will make long trips to Asia, the Middle East, North Africa, and Black Africa. All these countries will offer him numerous possibilities for new artistic creations. In 2002, after the death of his wife, Maurice Legrand went to live in a small house on his son Serge's land, in Catalonia, in the north of Spain. He paints every day, tirelessly. He said, after a little over a year there, “I will never have time to paint everything I have in mind.” In 2004, he died on the morning of August 14, 2004, peacefully, while having his coffee, in his bed. Maurice Legrand, a great master of Provence and the Camargue. An immense talent who will sooner or later be recognized throughout the world.
