Object description :

"Jean Teilliet (1870-1931) "shepherdess In Limousin" Limoges Saint Junien, Crozant, Madeline, Bichet"
New oil/canvas by Jean Cyprien Teilliet representing a shepherdess and her sheep in a Limousin landscape in autumn, circa 1910/1920, signed lower left. Format of the canvas without frame 61x46cm. It is indeed a superb post-impressionist composition by Jean Teilliet who paints here one of his favorite subjects, a country scene, here a shepherdess and her sheep in a Limousin valley, probably in the vicinity of Saint-Junien. As often he uses an impressionist touch and a very varied palette with autumnal tones of red, ochre, yellow, purple, blue, soft green, red etc... A superb work worthy of the best painters of his generation and of the neighboring Crozant school. Moreover, the resemblance with certain works by Paul Madeline is quite striking (see last photo), except that we must add a zero to the price of the latter's paintings. Jean-Cyprien Teillet was born on September 4, 1870 in Saint-Junien, at his parents' home located rue Saler (today Faubourg Liebneck). He was the son of Pierre-Séverin, doctor of medicine, and Marie-Alexine Laveyssière. Rubbing shoulders with the greatest artists of the time (his mother was a musician, his grandparents received Lamartine, Musset, Corot), his artistic predisposition was strongly encouraged. After studying at the Saint-Junien college, Jean-Cyprien, passionate about painting, continued with the School of Decorative Arts in Limoges, then the School of Fine Arts in Paris. He admirably painted the region dear to his heart. In 1904, with a few friends, he was behind the creation of the “Limousins de Paris” association, and that same year he organized a major artistic festival in Saint-Junien during which the “Limousins de Paris” was inaugurated. Corot website. Passionate about his region, after the First World War he undertook to collect the songs and dances of Limousin in order to save them from oblivion. He divides his time between his house in Saint-Germain de Confolens (16) and that of Saint-Junien which he had restored to his liking. It was in 1925 that he founded “la Noce Villageoise Limousine de Saint-Junien”, a group of singers and dancers perpetuating the customs of their ancestors. In 1929 he was also the creator of the municipal museum of Saint-Junien. His student was the now famous Suzanne Léger, a Limousin painter from the Crozant school. He died on October 23, 1931. This canvas is on its original stretcher, in very good condition for its age, recently cleaned by a professional. Delivered in an old Montparnasse frame, which has a few gaps, the most significant in the lower right corner. Guaranteed authentic work
