Japanese Print Fukusuke Circa 1795 Utamaro 1753-1806

Beautiful Japanese print Fukusuke and his two courtesans circa 1795. FUKUSUKE is the representation of a chubby man with a disproportionate head. It is a doll that was often present in tea houses and brothels because it brought lasting youth, wealth and also honor. This character is reputed to have actually existed. He embodied the features of a rich Kyoto merchant who lived at the end of the 18th Century by the name of Daimonjiya. This merchant with a particular physique was known to be happy in business and particularly generous to the poorest. Source: www.clickjapan.org/.
