Object description :

"Charente, 18th Century, Basting Spoon, Master Goldsmith Yver Family?"
Interesting solid silver stew or pot spoon dating from the eighteenth century. It has a so-called “plain flat” spatula handle and a large spoon. The back of the handle is engraved with a coat of arms topped with a count's crown, the remainder of the shield has been erased. The handle is struck three times with the same hallmark of a subscribed master goldsmith composed of the letters IAY, topped with a cinquefoil. The hallmark is 90% similar to the hallmark of Jean Yver, a goldsmith in Angoulême at the end of the seventeenth century. Several members of the Yver family appear in the Charente archives as goldsmiths, goldsmiths and jewelry dealers and most often as watchmakers. They are mentioned in Angoulême, Saintes, etc. The presence of a Y is extremely rare in maker's marks and the attribution to the Yver family is therefore defensible for several reasons. The spoon weighs 155 grams.
