Object description :

"Relief Depicting The Ascension Of Christ"
Relief Depicting the Ascension of Christ
Late 16th - beginning of the 17th century, Southern Germany, probably Augsbourg
Copper alloy repoussé and engraved
Metal oxidations Mounted on a wooden panel covered with crimson velvet. Missing and peeling festoon around the plaque.
Total dimensions: 48.8 x 46.8 cm (19.2 x 18.4 inches)
Dimensions of the relief: 35 x 34 cm (13.8 x 13.4 inches)

Large plaque made of copper alloy, with volumes obtained through repoussé, a technique typical of goldsmiths. The artisan's chisel then emphasized numerous details (halo around the head of Jesus, feathers of the wings, clothing...).
A keyhole has been crafted in the left center of the object, indicating its initial function as a decoration for a tabernacle door.
The style, subject, and goldsmith sensitivity of this work lead us to associate it with research conducted in Augsburg, most likely in the Lencker workshop around 1600.
