"“fauna Playing The Flute” Bronze After Lequesne Published By Gautier "
"Faun playing the flute" bronze sculpture with dark brown patina, very fine carving, after Eugène Louis Lequesne by the publisher Gautier, 19th century period. Lequesne pursued legal studies and became a lawyer before entering the Paris School of Fine Arts where he was a student of James Pradier, the following year he exhibited at the salon. He received the second Prix de Rome in 1843 then the first in 1844. From 1844 to 1949 he stayed at the Villa Medici in Rome where he met many artists, notably Charles Garnier. In 1851, he received the first class medal for his "dancing faun", the bronze copy of which will remain in the Luxembourg Gardens to this day. He became one of the most fashionable sculptors of the Second Empire, notably the majestic Virgin and Child of Notre Dame de la Garde in Marseille, the two pegasse of the Opéra Garnier in Paris... Many of his works are preserved in national and international museums.
