"Jean-baptiste Sebukangaga. Rwandan School. Original Terracotta. “head Of A Woman”. 1961"
Original terracotta with light gray patina, signed and dated 1961. Dimensions, Height 33 cm, width 12 cm, depth 15 cm.Jean-Baptiste Sebukangaga is a Rwandan sculptor, born in 1937. He studied in 1952 at the Kabogayi Art School (Rwanda) and at the Kinshasa Academy (Democratic Republic of Congo).
Jean-Baptiste Sebukangaga becomes the main artist on the genocide.
This is undoubtedly explained by its very particular profile. Co-founder in 1962 of the country's first and only art school, in Nyundo, he is considered the main Rwandan sculptor since the end of the colonial era. After the Tutsi genocide, from which he survived, the Rwandan state commissioned memorial monument projects from him. He thus created numerous works, including the monument installed in 1998 at Kanombe airport in Kigali on the occasion of Bill Clinton's first visit to Rwanda. It should be noted that such monumentalization is rare in Rwanda, the vast majority of memorials being devoid of sculptures or artistic representation.
