This porcelain figurine depicts Shōki defeating a demon. The figurine is made with remarkable figure expression and an interesting hand-painted finish. Shōki is a figure derived from the Taoist pantheon, appearing in Japan during the Heian period (794-1185). The popularity of this now somewhat forgotten deity reached its peak during the Edo period (1603-1868), when people displayed images of Shōki in front of their homes during the Tango no Sekku festival on May 5 to to ward off demons.
