"15th Century, Cremona School, Tile With Profile Of Checkers"
15th century, Cremona School
Tile with profile of checkers
Tempera on board, cm 21 x 25

The present panel, elegantly polychrome, has a female bust figure in profile. The elaborate hairstyle of the woman, consisting of a double row of similar braids fixed in a bun, is joined in doubleness to the bichrome of the round where the subject is located.
The painting on wooden tablet, made by specialized workshops, was mainly done with tempered colors, that is mixed with adhesive substances such as egg, then spread on the wooden support through a slight preparation.
The spread of tiles differently used on vertical supports or ceilings, born in the laboratories of Brescia and Cremona, soon became a social phenomenon between the first half of the fifteenth and the first quarter of the sixteenth century, as evidenced by the ceilings of Palazzo Bona (Averoldi) bresciano and Casa Zitti di Cemmo (Capo di Ponte, BS), where the profiles of some plaques began to take on a longer shape. Evocative decorated frames enclose in almost all the panels, in a sort of trompe l'oeil, the main figures of the plaques; illusionistically breaking through the third dimension often offer serrated or stylized floral patterns, returning what would appear to be the superior, and three-dimensional closure, of a retab. Sometimes the painted frames themselves are a pretext to hide nails and parts not pertinent to the figurative history, as happens for the late fifteenth-century specimens of the Archaeological Museum of Gavardo, but less often the polylobate frames take on a concrete importance on the example of the study-room of Palazzo Calini in Fiumi.
The heraldic reading of the figures appearing on the panels met with greater success in the house Bruni Conter a Limone di Gavardo (XV-XVI) and in the rooms of the Begia of Gussago (late fifteenth century); alongside this mode of interpretation, there is the historical resolution of emperors, philosophers, classical and medieval poets, adopted for example for Palazzo Colleoni and for the parish hall of the church of San Lorenzo in Brescia.
The present can be compared punctually with multiple abundant quadrangular images in Palazzo Bona Averoldi,  Casa Zitti in Cemmo, Palazzo della Mercanzia (now University of Brescia, School of Specialization for Legal Professions, wooden ceiling tablet in the hall on the ground floor, fifth-sixth decade of the fifteenth century), still Palazzo Colleoni of the Fathers of Peace of Brescia (gallery on the first floor, sixth-seventh decade of the fifteenth century), Parish of San Lorenzo, Casa Canonica (Palazzo della Prepositura) of Brescia. There are still tablets with profiles of checkers similar to Salò within the Civic Collection of Drawing (Palazzo dei Provveditori, eighth decade of the fifteenth century, workshop of the "Master of the tablets of Salò") and Limone di Gavardo, Casa Bruni Conter (formerly Andreis).
