French school of the 18th century, oil on canvas in oval format: portrait of a gentleman or bourgeois from the end of the Louis XVI period, in the 1790s. He is wearing a powdered wig, a green frock coat with buttons metallic, a vest with lines revealing the white shirt and the lawn tie. It is presented in a very beautiful original wooden frame gilded with gold leaf, in an oval shape. Louis XVI-Directoire period, 1790s. Beautiful painting of a man of quality, elegant painting, the details of the clothing and the expression of the face are very careful. Our portrait is not signed but the work of a good portraitist. The physical and character traits of our aristocrat clearly emerge from the painting. Taking into account the period and the color of the frock coat, this portrait reminds us of the royalist color of the verdets (name given to the members of royalist companies secretly organized after 9-Thermidor (July 1794) in the South of France, notably in Toulouse. They were so named because they wore a green ribbon on their arms, the color of the livery of the Count of Artois).
