"Vintage Coffee Table From The 1950s. In The Taste Of Ancient Rome. Wrought Iron And Veined Marble. "
Elegant 1950s coffee table with green gray marble top. The tray is simply placed on the iron frame. The table rests on four curved legs, connected by a spacer. A brass ring simulates a mock assembly of each part of the two feet. Deriving from the mensa delphica, an ancient banquet table often represented in the wall frescoes of Pompei or Herculaneum (Roman Campania), our table is perhaps an Italian model. The origin of the coffee table dates back to the end of the 18th century. With Anglomania developing particularly in France, the French elites then adopted the ritual of tea tasting. These first tables, initially tall and round, were designed to allow hosts and their guests to sit or stand, while enjoying a cup of tea served directly at their side. Later, industrialization and standardization opened up its use to other social categories. Chic and refined model.
