The tradition of wood carving in Brienz dates back to the mid-19th century. People in the area were looking for new job opportunities. They used their traditional craft skills, carving everyday objects and sculptures, and created a new business. Many woodcarvers were trained at the Brienz School of Woodcarving, founded in 1884. Around 1900, the woodcarving industry had around 2000 carvers. Brienz's wood sculptures have been successfully presented at several world exhibitions. With Gran Tour Tourism, wealthy people from all over the world visited the region and took home wood carving souvenirs. Today, some companies, such as Huggler Holzbildhauerei, still exist and make traditional sculptures.
