Oil on oak panel (a parquet board) Beautiful old frame in molded, guilloche and blackened wood and veneer with bone fillets. Total dimensions with its frame: 40 x 50 cm. The panel alone: 29 cm x 39.5 cm This Flemish, Antwerp school dates from the first third of the 17th century, and represents an allegory of the elements (water and earth) *Water is described under the guise of a bearded man (a river god) with fish, shells and aquatic birds at his feet, on the right of the composition: Neptune and Amphitrite are on a chariot pulled by sea horses. *The earth is in the form of a young woman holding a cornucopia and surrounded by fruits and flowers. Paintings with allegories as subjects were very popular in Flanders at that time. This precious painting, painted on oak panel, was produced by the workshop of the Antwerp artist Jan Brueghel the Younger. This Flemish painter born in 1601 died in 1678. He is the son of Jan Brueghel the Elder, grandson of Pieter Brueghel the Elder and nephew of Pieter Brueghel the Younger. He was trained by his father and spent his career producing works in a similar style. Around 1615, at the age of fourteen, he joined forces with his friend Antoine van Dyck, himself only sixteen years old, and they created their own workshop. With his brother Ambrosius, he produced landscapes, allegorical scenes, and other works of painstaking detail. For certain compositions, he collaborated with Jan van Kessel, his nephew who was also a painter (Antwerp 1626-1679). This versatile artist, he practiced many genres: insect studies, floral and marine still lifes, river landscapes, paradise landscapes, allegorical compositions, scenes with animals and genre scenes. Very good condition. Sold with certificate of expertise
